Production Sound Engineer

The Production Sound Engineer role at UNCSA is the Co-Sound Designer of the show, collaborating with the Sound Designer and the A1 on the design, documentation, build, installation, and maintenance of the sound system.
I led the initial system build of the racks and patching we could do pre-load in. I was also responsible for sending out weekly calls, attending weekly production meetings, load-in meetings, and sound system meetings with the Sound Designer and Sound Design Associate.
Sound Designer & Mixer

Hilloween is an Immersive Halloween Experience I got the opportunity to Sound Design and Mix. Integrating four different stories projected onto the historical Mitchell County Courthouse, I worked with the Lighting Designer to compile our work on one Qlab session. For the last two pieces, the professional art show and art featured from elementary schools in the area I composed two pieces to underscore both exhibits.

Mary Ruth Web Art Show Visuals
Composition piece created to support a live Art Exhibit, featuring artist Mary Ruth Webb.
I wanted to pay respects to the music we all associate with Halloween and keep the attention of the many children attending the spooky event.
The intro music is that from the Hollywood Classic the Mummy, spun into my web of sound effects and rhythmic beats I created, edited, and mixed using Logic Pro.
This cue manifested in one Qlab cue, I programmed to trigger the intro and then began looping after the iconic witch laugh.
"The School of Design & Production (D&P), in partnership with Mitchell County, N.C., is producing a multiday interactive Halloween experience that has been dubbed “Hilloween.” The project is part of a long-term multiyear plan by organizers to boost tourism in the western part of the state while highlighting Blue Ridge history, mystery and culture. More than a dozen students, several alumni and a number of faculty members are working hands-on with organizers for the spooky, educational and festive event in three areas of the county including Bakersville, Buladean and Spruce Pine."

"Before the curtain rises for Chautauqua Theater Company’s production this weekend, sound designer Justin Schmitz emphasized the importance of collaboration as a key factor for its success.
'You have to lean on your collaborators as a team ultimately, and that’s really truly where it all blends together and becomes the final product,' he said.
Presenting a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, written by Kate Hamill, the company’s ability to come together has been 'remarkable,' he said."
